Chapter 17

The Rhumbek dungeons were dark and damp.

The smell of dead corpses lingered in the air. Kiba’s feet were dragged through it as the trolls continued to haul her. The prison cells screamed death. Skeletons sat in one corner with their bony wrists still chained to the wall, while others hung by what was once the neck from the ceiling. Blood was smeared across the walls within the cells.

Kiba did not attempt to fight back. After her failure earlier, she had no hope of attempting to escape.

When the guards reached the cell at the far end, they opened up the metal door and threw her inside. It was a giant metal box with no commodities. There was only one small window with bars.

Kiba crawled into the corner as she heard the click of the lock. She had no hope for life. She felt ashamed of herself for letting her pack down. They counted on her, but she failed.

Kiba closed her eyes and heard the sound of wolves howling.

I'm sorry.

Selena’s group was dismissed for the evening. However, before leaving, one of the king’s servants advised that King Dionysus wanted to talk to them in the morning. Selena’s spirits lifted; she would finally have her chance to talk to him about Ulrich’s return.

Azrael warned, “It looks like you’ll have your chance to save Rhumbek, but remember, we don’t have forever.”

The three separated and went to their rooms for the rest of the night.

Selena couldn’t help but think of that girl as she lay in bed. The same vision she had before continued to haunt her. However, her dream changed to where she was instead standing in the middle of what used to be part of the Hinterlands. Many of the trees were destroyed in a fire, and the little girl was devastated. Selena watched the girl making herself bleed by clawing off some of her skin. A giant, green dragon appeared and engulfed the little girl.

The next morning, Selena, tired from the lack of sleep, went to her mirror to wash her face. She looked at reflection and almost panicked. At first, she thought she saw the wolf girl. The purple-red eyes continued to stare into hers. Her reflection blinked at her. When Selena closed her eyes and opened them, she saw herself.

Her heart raced when Selena heard a knock on her door.

“Hey, are you decent?” Rahim asked.

She scurried to find her robes and draped them over her night clothes and quickly fixed her hair before opening the door. “I am now.”

She noticed that his eyes were heavy and dark.

“How are you feeling?” he asked her. “I heard you scream from across the hallway.”

Selena looked down, a bit ashamed of her outbursts.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered, “I didn't realize it. I suppose that I'm somewhat used to having night terrors.”

“I wonder how you ever get any sleep. I came to tell you that Dormrir died last night. The healers weren’t able to save him.”

“That’s horrible. Did the arrow pierce his heart?” Selena asked.

“Actually, no.
